| In 1857, French physician
Ambroise Tardieu (1818-1879) published a forensic medical study to
assist courts in cases involving "pederasty."
Tardieu believed a quick medical exam could reveal a man's sexual
inclinations, and he spelled out the physical signs that indicated
pederasty. According to his study, some active pederasts have peculiarly long and
skinny penises well suited to rectal penetration while others are
blessed with tapered penises whose shape is well accommodated by
passive pederasts' funnel-shaped anuses. Tardieu's work was
influential, but was gradually displaced by the work of men like
Karl Westphal who located the manifestations of pederasty not in penises
and anuses, but in disturbed minds.
