1889:  Scandal on Cleveland Street

A scandal broke in London when the public learned of a male prostitution ring whose clients included English aristocrats and, according to rumor, a member of the Royal Family.  The scandal marked the beginning of a national period of detestation for buggers that culminated in the prosecution of Oscar Wilde in 1895.
