Biography:
Karl Heinrich Ulrichs (1825-1895)
| German
jurist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs was the first modern European
to openly acknowledge his own man-loving nature and to
defend it in print. He called men who are sexually
attracted to other men Urnings, and published twelve
pamphlets defending Urning love. His first pamphlet
appeared under the pseudonym Numa Numantius in 1864, but
by 1868 he was publishing under his own name. |

Karl Heinrich Ulrichs |
Ulrichs developed a scientific theory that tried to
account for Urningism, and his pamphlets were devoted to
defending it and opposing Paragraph
175. Unfortunately, Ulrichs' theories were
quickly appropriated by doctors who ruled that Urnings
were diseased creatures.
Ulrichs'
courage in coming to the public defense of Urnings was
unique and even his most devoted fans were afraid to
openly support him. Lacking financial resources or
public support, Ulrichs moved to a self-imposed exile in
an Italian village at the end of his life.
