Any of several police
methods used to fool someone into committing a crime in front of
officials. Many police methods used against gays were pioneered by
French policemen early in the
1700s. These officials sent informers to cruise for sex in popular
meeting places. Anyone who responded to their overtures was
promptly hauled off to the police station.
In the U. S. and Canada
in the 1950s and 1960s, police regularly staked out roadside rest rooms
and enticed men into sexual situations, then collared their
victims.
